Google banned a face swapping app from the Google Play store after 404 Media found the app was advertising its ability to create nonconsensual, AI-generated sexual videos on websites dedicated to deepfake porn.

“The app [REDACTED] has been suspended for violating Google Play's App Promotion policy,” a Google spokesperson told me in an email on Tuesday. 404 Media is not naming the app and redacting its name from Google’s comment because it still allows users to create nonconsensual porn on its website. Google’s policy states, “We don’t allow apps that directly or indirectly engage in, or benefit from promotion practices (such as ads) that are deceptive or harmful to users or the developer ecosystem.” In its “examples of common violation,” it lists “Using sexually explicit ads to direct users to your app’s Google Play listing for download.”
